The Internet

For those of you that remember before the internet it was a simpler time. We went outside !!!!

However if it wasnt for the internet then i wouldnt have a job and progressed my career over the well lets just say last few decades.

The “World Wide Web” or Internet as we know it now was initially being used privately by the government between 1969 – 1980s (Prob in area 51 …… ). It became available to the public in 1993 with “Browsers” and “Search Engines” as the first way of “Crawling” the internet for information.

The Internet is effectively lots of computers that hold information connected together that make the data they hold available for everyone to access and see.

There were different browsers to use in the 90’s (WorldWideWeb, Mosaic, Netscape, Internet Explorer) all of which could search the combined network of all the linked computers in the world.

It is like a Library that is always open. The books are websites and instead of walking to the shelf to get the book you just view the content of the book (website) on your computer.

In the early days connection to the internet was made using a “dial-up modem” these plugged into your phone line. The modem would then dial another modem (that was connected to the internet) it would answer your call and if the correct details were presented over the modem it would connect and voila you had internet access.

However and its a big however there was always issues. Until filters were installed if someone picked up the phone while you were on the internet you lost connection. Speeds were very slow and trying to do anything at pace was virtually impossible

These days we have Gbps (Gigabits Per Second) speeds into our homes and offices. in 1990 it all started with 14 kbps (Kilobits Per Second) thats 0.0014% of what we can currently get.

Where as just now to download a 5GB file may take 10 – 15 mins (Maybe less) in the 90’s it would take up to 35 days to download. Thats hoping no one picked up the phone in your house while doing it ….. or its start all over again.

Now a days life is simpler as we can connect with LAN / WIFI and Data connections to the internet from practically anywhere. Meaning that everyone everywhere is always online and available …..
